"It's true, look at bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Bush, and most dramatically No Doubt. Have you guys heard them before they got big? All were very awesome. I don't like any of them now. They have totally changed their music." - J Lewis Photo

Most often people seem to confuse "selling out" with changing styles and growing musically. Of course Green Day have changed, they were still teenagers when 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (their first album on Lookout! records) came out. Billie Joe wrote "Why do you Want Him?" when he was twelve for crying out loud. My point is as musicians grow older and acquire more musical influences, their music will mature and may perhaps change dramatically. Blink-182 have continued to get more and more complex with every album and they have yet to disappoint me. Jimmy Eat World seemed to actually take a step back from Clarity with the release of Bleed American as far as complexity and layers of tracks and such, but it is a magnificent album. Now, addressing Isaiah's example of Vagrant ruining bands, I am going through this exact thing with all of the kids on the Audiogalaxy message board (if you don't have Audiogalaxy, get it. Best music procuring software ever). Anyways, there are many people on there that absolutely hate the new Get Up Kids record (I love it by the way), and they went through this whole thing about Vagrant ruining bands. Personally, I don't see any cases of that. Of course one could say that they ruined Hey Mercedes since it isn't like any of the Braid stuff or that Saves the Day completely wussed out, but I think that they just wanted to change the sound to avoid getting stale. I know that I wouldn't like buying the same thing eight times over. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what keeps us interested. That is what keeps us buying album after album of these artists, because we never know what they'll release next. I'll say right now that I have never known of any band that completely changed their sound from record to record. Bands will always have that little something in their music that got you interested in them in the first place, although sometimes it may be a bit hard to find (with No Doubt being a fine exception. You were right there J Lewis, the new album is awful). Well, that's my two cents. If you have anything to say in response to this, please e-mail me as I'm sure this topic will be closed soon. I love to talk music, as you can probably tell. Anyways, if you read this far, kudos. You get a brownie.

P.S. Moosegirl, I don't know if you've heard the new New Found Glory song "My Friends Over You", but if that track is any indication, Sticks and Stones is going to be a great album.

You are right forgetting, also an example is Incubus, we all have heard SCIENCE album (well maybe from Fungus Amoungus album), their good hard rock songs, that later were change in make yourself and morning view to some kinda of ballad style rock songs, but I think this band has been a great band, (well of course like other bands when starting have diffiulties) and I love them since i heard them in 1998

Yes, I have heard it, and I thought it was pretty good. I'm not saying this happens to all bands, but it is possible that it could have happened to them. I just used New Found Glory as an example. roll eyes

I think you guys should check Iron Maiden. THey don't really sell out. In fact, their last studio album is filled with non radio friendly tracks spanning from 3 to 9 minutes in length.
But selling out a bit isn't much of a disaster.Take a look at Deicide, Dimmu Borgir, Sentenced, and Tiamat. They were unlistenable bands before but they sure bring me chills when I listen to their latter, more radio friendly albums.
Anyway, the worst can happen. Like Metallica (why? frown ) But anyway, both sides rocks! big grin

Parhaps I did confuse selling out and changing, but it seems like they didn't start "changing for the worst"(or selling out as I see it) in my opinion until they became noticed by MTV and that sort of thing. YOu are right though, musicians do change, but I don't know that it is always a good thing. Blink-182 has become more complex with their music, but does that make it better? Not necessarily. Maybe some people like it more that way, but I don't, I prefer their older cds...Buddha, Cheshire Cat, and Dude Ranch, after that I started to loose interest. Never knowing what the next album will hold also is good, I agree, but it is horrible when the next album is dissapointing. It is like loosing a band. You like them on thier last CD and that will be the last of their music you will ever hear because they changed and you don't like thier new stuff. Alot of my favorite bands I hope never will really change because then I can expect the same old music that I like from them. If they get huge and are still making the same music as 10 years before, great! As for buying the same album 8 times, that also might not be true as though it may still sound the same, it is still different. That is a good reason why we like more than one group of musicians, for variety.

Hey everyone Blink has noticed what has been happening and stuff, so there trying to chnage their style back into the Punk area, but another thing, They don't want to lose all their fans, so they hope not to mess up smile

and oh ya has anyone heard of the new album "BoxCar Racer", it involves Tom and Travis in it and its AWESOME
Its a tribute cd, thanking all the bands that helped Blink come this far smile

and if yall think Blink has gone total Pop, then it might be Travis' fault ya know, Listen to the old cds, then listen to their new cds, you'll notice a BIG difference in drum styles Plus Travis doesn't consider himself a punk, maybe thats why he so quiet most of the time
Travis is cool anyways

Come to think of it, you are right, before Travis, they were doing great. But since I don't watch much T.V. I have only heard of this "BoxCar Racer" from my friends. But I heard it differently. I heard Blink broke up and Tom and Travis went on to make a new band called "BoxCar Racer". However what you say seems more reasonable because I couldn't think of a reason Blink would just break up out of no where and then all of the sudden have a new band with Tom and Travis, I would have thought Mark and Tom if anything....

No, Blink haven't broken up. Box Car Racer is just a side project with Tom and Travis and two other guys. I have heard the song and seen the video for their first single "I Feel So" and I like it a lot.

"and if yall think Blink has gone total Pop, then it might be Travis' fault ya know, Listen to the old cds, then listen to their new cds, you'll notice a BIG difference in drum styles Plus Travis doesn't consider himself a punk, maybe thats why he so quiet most of the time."-Hawkdawg

Travis doesn't have anything to do with writing the music as far as I know (melody and lyrics anyways, I know he writes the drum lines.). Besides, look at The Aquabats (Travis's old band). They were ska, so I don't think that any of that influence is in the new Blink. Anyhow, the reason I decided to pick on you Hawkdawg is that I just got finished watching the new Blink home video that came out today, The Urethra Chronicles II, and Travis addresses that exact issue. He said that in his interview in Modern Drummer (which I'm guessing is where you read that he doesn't consider himself punk), his words were totally twisted around. What he said is that he doesn't consider himself just a punk DRUMMER, since he grew up playing jazz and such. I don't mean to bust on you man, I just wanted to clear that up. I can't believe this topic is still open. Chaos and TR must be getting lazy in their old age.

If there is anything I have learned while moderating these message boards, it's that music is a passionate topic that people love to ramble on about. wink Therefore, I always considered an OT thread about music to be an outlet that people are clamoring to outpour on. smile Not to mention, it is a way for the fans to talk about something that they share in common to get to know one another more. smile

There is a point when too much is too much, though.
