I am a web developer and a fan of Rachael and have been tinkering with the idea of making a RLC fan site. But i dont know if it would be worth it due to the fact that there are so many great ones out there already. I have alot of content for it and alot would be unique... such as clips from most of her movies in High Quality divx format which i made myself... Most of which are between 10 and 50 mb. All are full screen capeable. Also over 100mb of pictures. However if i make such a site and pay to get it hosted would it be worth it? Opinions?

Definately, even the great rlc.net hasn't got everything on rachael not even half the stuff, and it's by far the best rlc website out there. If you've seen other good rlc sites I'd like to know, coz I sure as hell haven't.

If TR did a site it would probably be kick ass but he doesn't, so the web definately needs a good site.

Do I sound desperate????

How long has Rachael been acting? And in that time there still isn't a definitave site for her....so if you think you're up to the task then I'm 100 percent behind it.

...Or you could help us make RLC.net even better than it is today by suggesting stuff like this to us. The main reasons for this site not being updated in a long while is a lot of planning and behind-the-scenes work, not to mention a change in administrators.

About RLC.net not having tons and tons of stuff is mainly a matter of limited server space, nothing else. 100+ MB of images and X times 10-50 MB movie files would add up to a whole lot of server space... and such space isn't cheap unless you run your own server. Although then there's the issue of bandwidth etc...

And for your information, Ribena... TR was recently appointed the RLC.net webmaster.

Hmmm Sunjammer what exactly are you proposing? I do like your site and think its the best availible. However i work with Javascript, CSS, HTML and Do alot of work in Navigation Bars for sites in photoshop. I am really good a clearing up images that are fuzzy or out of focus somehow. I can also enlarge photos to a extent. Now if i were to say i will help you with your site what exactly would that mean? Would i have some say in what is placed on the site? and the graphic elements and what not? Would i have FTP access to update or add scripting elements? Would you be able to handel a few clips a week being put up for download? My plan for the site i would design was to save bandwidth by creating a script that changes the downloadable clips every week or month so people cant just download 500mb of clips in 1 stint. With sites i make I tend to make it as automated as possible... meaning there isnt really many times the site needs to be updated by me unless new content is added. I am interested to see what your responce is to some of these questions as if i could do a bit of redesigning of the site and perhaps script some things in i could imporve the look and add Quite alot of Content i believe.

Server space may not be as much of an issue as it once was because now, this site is hosted on the hal-9000 server. smile I will talk to Pher and see what he will allow us to use. smile I think more video files would be awesome! smile I think the main reason there weren't a ton of them was because of the server space issue that Sunjammer explained. smile

Speaking of video clips, once this transition is done and I am able to update the site properly, I still plan on adding the full video clip of "Celebrity Adventures" that Frank made and gave permission to post here on the site! smile I know people have been waiting a long time for this because many fans (especially fans outside of the U.S.) never got to see it! Stay tuned, folks! smile

In my opinion the rlc.net site may not be up to scratch right at this moment, but this board is, if anything posted here could go on the site soon after that would be cool.

TGO: RLC.net is always open for contributors of media clips etcetera and will give those full credit for what they contribute with.

As for the site design, graphic elements and such, I'm in charge of that. TR has veto on that one though. Everything I do has to be approved by TR. As for the small redesigning, FTP access, adding of scripts and whatnot, you'll have to ask TR about that as TR's in charge and the site staff will sit down and discuss.

Just to clear a few things up, I started rachaelleighcook.net. With the help of some friends I developed the concepts, wrote, and scripted the site. Sunjammer and I worked extensively last summer to redesign the site.

Sunjammer did all the graphic design, color selection, etc. He is in charge of that. I have since passed the webmaster torch to TR.

When the site was redesigned most of the scripts that automated the backend (news, galleries, etc) were not upgraded due to time constraints on my end. That is the true reason for the lack of updates since. I was working on a new news script a week or so ago but my time constraints are still great and my interest isn't there.

If you or anyone else would like to contribute to this site, its greatly appreciated, but you'll need to take baby steps. With all due respect, we do not give FTP access out liberally. Once you have established yourself as a helper, that might change.

The other alternative is to create your own site. This is the only way you'll get instant access and creative control. If you choose this route, I wish you the best of luck, as its a tough job to manage a site like this. If you choose to do this, I would appreciate if you don't post on this message board to attract people to go help your site; that's just disrespectful. I don't go to your house and invite your friends to mine.

Thanks

Well first i was just asking for peoples opinions on if it would be worth it and didnt direct anyone elsewhere, Now as for the helping you i would love to, but since i am a good webdesigner and graphic artist i would need some kind of way to update the page even if its just sending files to someone with instructions on how to use them. I am also a VB programer that can make little apps to help update the page. Now as for making my own site. I have already started a layout and all but dont want to go to far with it if this workd out that i can help or join your little team. I will upload the layout when i can just to show you i am not just blowing wind out my ass here. There wont be much content but you will be able to see i know what i am doing.

We use Perl/PHP for automation. I don't think you can run VB exes on a linux machine.

Go ahead and work on your design and upload it, we'll have a look.

Also, HTML is disabled in all forums, so you might want to update your signature.

Looks good for the beginning, T.G.O. smile
How long can you keep it open?

An own Rachael site brings much fun - and work.

And yes, there are very many sites out there. When you're looking for an own fansite you have to look for many things at your project:
- What do you want to present? (main contents) Maybe you want something which differs from the mass? Your ideas are important when you wanna be unique smile
- How do you want to present it? (design, background color, if you aren't native English speaker maybe in your language etc.)
- What do you want to add (pictures, videos - depending on your main content)
- Which structure? (navigation system...)
- Which technics do you want to add? (not every browser is compatible with every script)
- Where do you want to present it? (free homepage, by payment, own domain, own server...your address will be important,
other webmasters can be patient and give a link to yours - but what happens when your address will change???)

After this simple beginning, you've started your own site/homepage, then you begin to think:
- Is everything there ok?
- Are there people who sometimes visit it?
- Do these ones feel well by looking at my site?
- Should I add something or change?
Then your site is growing up smile
...or not when it's already perfect or no more webspace to use wink

I also have a Rachael Leigh Cook site. smile
Take a look and give your comments

thx,

Well the real reason i made this was to host my pics and mostly my clips of Rachael. I have alot of clips and plan on making more. I just figured many sires wouldnt have the bandwidth to be able to host them all. If i could find a site that would host all my videos and allow me to design a few things for them (scripts, images) then i would be more than willing. However 400mb or clips and 100mb for pics is quite alot of space for a site. If i get the job i might be getting then i will be able to pay for my own site on my friends dedicated server who will give me practicly unlimited space and bandwidth, therefore allowing me to make a great multimedia page which is what i want to do. I really am not in the loop about what rachael is doing all the time and what not like this site is. I just have alot of content. I know most of the things you are talking about as i am in school for comp programing razz.

As for your site i have added to faves since it has a list of every site i know of and alot more razz. Nice work!

As for how long it can be there? well not sure.... lol probably about a week then i will have to take it down. But i will be able to get it hosted soon hopefully.

23 year old collage student who has been messing with webpages for about 7 years but ony really got into it within the last year since school started. So not that long. I am not a profecional but i know javascript like the back of my hand. Cant do any server side stuff since thats next semester so the php and perl you are talking about are beyond me.

BTW i saw you are upgrading the board in the main page is there any way i could send you my script for Links? You see on the page how the links fade in and out of colors? The script is in a external js file and could be used on this board if you wanted.. its a very easy to set up script.
